    Supporting Protocols for Structuring and Intelligent Information Dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

    The goal of this dissertation is the presentation of supporting protocols for structuring and intelligent data dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The protocols are intended to first introduce a structure in VANETs, and thus promote the spatial reuse of network resources. Segmenting a flat VANET in multiple cluster structures allows for more efficient use of the available bandwidth, which can effectively increase the capacity of the network. The cluster structures can also improve the scalability of the underlying communication protocols. The structuring and maintenance of the network introduces additional overhead. The aim is to provide a mechanism for creating stable cluster structures in VANETs, and to minimize this associated overhead. Further a hybrid overlay-based geocast protocol for VANETs is presented. The protocol utilizes a backbone overlay virtual infrastructure on top of the physical network to provide geocast support, which is crucial for intervehicle communications since many applications provide group-oriented and location-oriented services. The final contribution is a structureless information dissemination scheme which creates a layered view of road conditions with a diminishing resolution as the viewing distance increases. Namely, the scheme first provides a high-detail local view of a given vehicle\u27s neighbors and its immediate neighbors, which is further extended when information dissemination is employed. Each vehicle gets aggregated information for road conditions beyond this extended local view. The scheme allows for the preservation of unique reports within aggregated frames, such that safety critical notifications are kept in high detail, all for the benefit of the driver\u27s improved decision making during emergency scenarios

    A Mobility-Aware General-Purpose Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network Clustering Scheme

    Clustering is an effective method of topology control for wireless ad-hoc networks. Clusters introduce a structure in a flat network and can guarantee some basic levels of performance in presence of high mobility and large number of nodes. Therefore clusters can effectively increase the network capacity by the spatial reuse of network resources. Robust clustering schemes designed specifically for VANETs must address cluster stability and the high-mobility exhibited by the nodes, while reducing communication and computational costs. This paper presents a distributed multi-hop clustering scheme designed for VANETs, which utilizes mobility information to generate a stable cluster structure, maintained through the propagation of periodic DSRC safety messages. Our scheme takes the directionality of VANET nodes into consideration, where clusters are formed only between vehicles exhibiting a similar mobility pattern. Simulation results confirm that the execution of our scheme, due to its features, increases the average cluster lifetime and stability, and reduces the amount of communication and processing needed to form stable cluster structures in VANETs

    A Low-Cost Soft Robotic Hand Exoskeleton for Use in Therapy of Limited Hand–Motor Function

    We present the design and validation of a low-cost, customizable and 3D-printed anthropomorphic soft robotic hand exoskeleton for rehabilitation of hand injuries using remotely administered physical therapy regimens. The design builds upon previous work done on cable actuated exoskeleton designs by implementing the same kinematic functionality, but with the focus shifted to ease of assembly and cost effectiveness as to allow patients and physicians to manufacture and assemble the hardware necessary to implement treatment. The exoskeleton was constructed solely from 3D-printed and widely available off-the-shelf components. Control of the actuators was realized using an Arduino microcontroller, with a custom-designed shield to facilitate ease of wiring. Tests were conducted to verify that the range of motion of the digits and the forces exerted at the fingertip coincided with those of a healthy human hand

    Clinical evaluation of a mobile, low-cost sysstem for fluorescence guided photodynamic therapy of early oral cancer in India

    BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality due to oral cancer in India are exacerbated by a lack of access to effective treatments among medically underserved populations. We developed a user-friendly low-cost, portable fibre-coupled LED system for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of early oral lesions, using a smartphone fluorescence imaging device for treatment guidance, and 3D printed fibreoptic attachments for ergonomic intraoral light delivery. METHODS: 30 patients with T1N0M0 buccal mucosal cancer were recruited from the JN Medical College clinics, Aligarh, and rural screening camps. Tumour limits were defined by external ultrasound (US), white light photos and increased tumour fluorescence after oral administration of the photosensitising agent ALA (60 mg/kg, divided doses), monitored by a smartphone fluorescence imaging device. 100 J/cm2 LED light (635 nm peak) was delivered followed by repeat fluorescence to assess photobleaching. US and biopsy were repeated after 7-17 days. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03638622, and the study has been completed. FINDINGS: There were no significant complications or discomfort. No sedation was required. No residual disease was detected in 22 out of 30 patients who completed the study (26 of 34 lesions, 76% complete tumour response, 50 weeks median follow-up) with up to 7.2mm depth of necrosis. Treatment failures were attributed to large tumour size and/or inadequate light delivery (documented by limited photobleaching). Moderately differentiated lesions were more responsive than well-differentiated cancers. INTERPRETATION: This simple and low-cost adaptation of image-guided PDT is effective for treatment of early-stage malignant oral lesions and may have implications in global health
